Delaware Sports Hall-of-Famer John Walsh, who coached Joe Biden, dies

John Walsh was too ill to attend his Delaware Sports Hall of Fame induction in 2012, but then-Vice President Joe Biden wasn’t going to miss it.

Biden made a surprise visit to laud Walsh, who’d been his football coach at Archmere Academy, that night at the Chase Center on the Riverfront.

“He urged us to play the game the same way you lived your life, with passion and integrity,” Biden said during an emotional speech. “No matter how good you were, coach always stressed that you were a teammate first.”

Walsh died Friday after that long illness. He was 83.

The Carbondale, Pennsylvania, native and 1954 Philadelphia Northeast Catholic High graduate played baseball and football at the University of Delaware, graduating in 1958 and later earning a master’s degree.

Walsh coached Archmere to a 50-14-1 record over eight seasons and was named state coach of the year in 1960.

He then moved to nearby Concord when it opened in 1969 and coached the Raiders’ first football teams. Walsh coached other sports as well and later returned to Archmere and guided the Auks to the 1986 and 1987 state volleyball championships.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road. Mass of Christian Burial is there Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Lewis transferred to Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran for her junior season of high school basketball, then returned home to Strath Haven (Pa.) for her senior season. The point guard originally signed with Georgia Tech last November but changed her mind after Tech fired head coach MaChelle Joseph in March.
