University of Delaware basketball loses 1 player, adds another

The University of Delaware men’s basketball program is losing one player but gaining another.

Matt Veretto has decided to leave Delaware to attend college closer to his Manchester, Connecticut, home, concentrate on academics and not play basketball.

Delaware also received a verbal commitment from 6-4 swing guard Ebby Asamoah, a senior at Magruder High in Columbia, Maryland.

Veretto played in 33 games with 12 starts for the Blue Hens last season. He averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 39.1 percent on 3-pointers. He made six 3-pointers en route to a season-high 20 points in an overtime win at Columbia on Dec. 2.

The Blue Hens went 17-16 for their first winning season in five years and reached the CAA Tournament semifinals. They graduate three players — second-team All-CAA post Eric Carter, starting guard Darian Bryant and part-time starting guard/forward Ryan Johnson. Becoming eligible will be transfers Nate Darling (guard, UAB), Justyn Mutts (forward, High Point) and Dylan Painter (post, Villanova).

Asamoah was first-team All-State among those from Maryland 3A and 4A schools and an honorable mention All-Metropolitan pick for the Washington, D.C., area. He averaged 18 points and 9.9 rebounds per game as a senior.

He is Delaware’s second incoming freshman for the 2019-20 school year. He joins John McCoy, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward who graduated last year from Mansfield (Mass.) High and attended Tilton School in New Hampshire as a post-grad this year.

Union’s McKenzie named to U.S. U-20 side

Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie of Bear has been called up to the United States team for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup beginning May 23 in Poland.

McKenzie, who turned 20 in February, was a starter and scored three goals for the U.S. at the CONCACAF Under-20 regional qualifying tournament in Florida in November. The U.S. won all eight games, including blanking Honduras 1-0 in the semifinals and Mexico 2-0 for the title.

McKenzie was one of eight U.S. players named to the tournament’s Best XI. He then was invited to the U.S. senior national team’s January training camp, where he was the youngest player.

“Extremely blessed, honored and excited to represent this country in such a respected tournament!” McKenzie tweeted.

A homegrown player out of the Philadelphia Union Academy, McKenzie became a starter in his first season with the Union last year. The former Newark Charter School student got his soccer start in the Bear/Glasgow and Western YMCA leagues.

Because of injuries and a recent case of appendicitis, McKenzie has appeared in just one game this season for the Union and another for its Bethlehem Steel FC affiliate.
