Appoquinimink baseball runs record to 16-0 with close win over DMA

MIDDLETOWN — Even in an undefeated season, you’re going to have some close games.

The Appoquinimink baseball team had one for the second time this week on Friday, and passed the test to remain unbeaten.

The Jaguars scored a run in the first, added some insurance in the fifth and got a four-hit shutout from pitcher Joey Davis in a 2-0 home win over Delaware Military Academy.

Appoquinimink (16-0) also edged St. Georges 2-0 on Tuesday, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth. Hodgson and Woodbridge are the only teams remaining with a chance to keep the Jags from running the regular-season table.

“I keep telling these guys, we’ve got to learn how to win those games as well,” Appo coach Mike Torres said. “Because come state tournament time, those are the games that we’re going to be in.”

The Jaguars were under pressure all the way, as Seahawks starter Colin Smith only allowed five hits. But Appo got a couple at the right time.

Mason Keene walked to start the bottom of the first, moved to second on Alex Jones’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Lorenzo Carrier’s hard single to the opposite field.

“He just threw me a fastball away, and I took it to the right side,” Carrier said.

It stayed that way until the fifth, when Jones rocked a leadoff double to left, moved to third on Carrier’s fly ball and scored on Krew Bouldin’s sacrifice fly to double Appo’s lead.

“That run was really important, because it was a really close game, 1-0,” Jones said. “We definitely needed an insurance run for Joey. That’s all he needed to win the game.”

Davis retired the final six DMA (10-4) hitters after Smith led off the top of the sixth with a single. Offspeed pitches were the key.

“If I’m not feeling my fastball, I’ll either go to the changeup or the curveball,” Davis said. “… I just went to my changeup, and I just relied on my changeup the whole game. That’s what got me through it.”

Long winning streaks are especially rare in baseball, given the sometimes tight schedules that can lead to difficult pitching matchups. But after winning nine of their first 14 games by eight runs or more, the Jaguars have been solid in two close ones this week.

“It just comes down to execution,” Jones said. “Every day in practice, we work. We grind every day, just hitting and fielding, relying on our defense. That’s why we’ve been so successful.”
