OC Air Show 2019: Who's performing, where to watch

CLOSE

The Ocean City Air Show returns for 2018 with the F-35 and the Thunderbirds Produced by Megan Raymond, Salisbury Daily Times

The OC Air Show returns for a 12th year, offering a mix of military and civilian demo teams which will fly over the beaches and the Boardwalk on June 15 and 16.

Whether you're a first-time attendee or a returning observer, there's plenty to see at the air show this year, including some first-time appearances.

Here are five things to know about this year's show:

Who's in this year's lineup?

This year's show is expected to have a strong military presence. Headlining the show are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, with a debut from the Canadian Armed Forces Snowbirds.

"Fans will get a real treat at seeing this team," said Chris Dirato, director of public relations for OC Air Show.

“Of course, we have a plethora of other military performers including the U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper Demo Team, two A-10 Warthog Thunderbolts from the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard (flyovers each day) and the C-5M Super Galaxy from the 436th Airlift Wing based at Dover Air Force Base (Saturday only).”

The C-5M Super Galaxy is the U.S. military's largest transport aircraft.

Civilian performer demo teams will have a presence at the show as well.

Matt Chapman, an aerobatic pilot, will be performing solo in the Embry Riddle 330LX. Chapman has flown aerobatics since 1984. He has achieved several honors at worldwide aerobatic competitions, according to the air show's website.

The P-51 Mustang, a World War II-era fighter flown by Scott "Scooter" Yoak, will also be demoed. P-51s were used during World War II, the Korean War and other conflicts.

Where and when is the best place to watch?

You'll be able to see the performances if you're between 14th to 17th Streets, with 16th Street being the "Aerial 50 yard line" or Show Center, according to OC Air Show's website.

Corporate chalets and hospitality tents extending from along the sea wall of The Boardwalk will be at the event site as well.

For top quality viewing experiences, organizers recommend attendees check out premium viewing areas including the VIP Penthouse, VIP Skybox, Flight Line Club and Drop Zone Beach.

To learn more or purchase premium viewing or VIP tickets, visit ocairshow.com or call 877-722-2927.

Is what I see in the sky all there is to show?

If you want more to see than the airplanes, exhibitors will be present near Show Center over the weekend as well. They will include the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol and companies including Toyota, T-Mobile, and Geico.

Can I watch the show from my boat?

Viewing of the show from a boat or watercraft is permitted in a limited area on the eastern perimeter of the United States Coast Guard Safety Zone, the show's website states. The eastern perimeter extends 12,000 feet parallel with the flight path of the performing aircraft. The depth along the eastern perimeter is about 30 to 35 feet.

No anchoring, hovering or idling of boats or watercraft will be permitted to the north or south of the Coast Guard Safety Zone. U.S. Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Commission vessels will be patrolling the perimeter of the Coast Guard Safety Zone and will be strictly enforcing these guidelines and regulations.

What's the traffic going to be like?

Traffic tends to be hectic during the weekend of the air show. The Worcester County Sheriff's Office made a Facebook announcement last year warning drivers to be aware of congestion during air show weekend. You might want to check its Facebook page again early in the week for an update.

"Traditionally, West Ocean City will become congested very quickly going into Ocean City on Friday and Saturday. Please plan accordingly. The peak times for traffic congestion will be as crowds exit on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the air show. In past years, Route 90 and Route 1 in Delaware will be congested and delays can be expected.

"Additional Deputies will be out this weekend to keep traffic flowing as best we can. Use alternate routes if at all possible during Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. If you have to travel into Ocean City, just remember to allow some extra time. We are hopeful for a beautiful weekend and folks can get out and enjoy the Air-Show or weekend events you have planned. As always, be careful in your travels."

Ocean City officials recommend using the municipal bus system to avoid some of the traffic. Buses leave every few minutes from the Park and Ride Lot on Route 50 and also the Tanger Outlets across Route 50.

Regular bus service on Coastal Highway starting at 144th Street at the Ocean City Northside Transit Station will be leaving southbound every 10 minutes or less. Buses may be boarded at stops that are located every other block between the 144th Street Station and 17th Street, where the Air Show can be accessed.

When leaving the Air Show in the afternoon, head back to 17th Street for the Park and Ride buses and head back to your vehicle at the Park and Ride Lot on Route 50. Police officers will be available to direct buses out in the traffic. Buses and bikes have dedicated travel lanes of Coastal Highway from 15th Street to the 144th Street Station. Bus stops along Coastal Highway will also be available for your trip back to the north Ocean City and mid-town areas.

Special ticket agents will be available at the Park and Ride Lot on 16th and 17th streets to allow for easy and quick access to the bus. Restrooms are available. If boarding a bus to buy an all-day pass, one must have exact change to purchase a pass.

The Boardwalk trams will continue to operate except at the full height of the air show, given crowd levels on the Boardwalk. Trams will operate from the 27th Street Station on the Boardwalk to the First Street Station near the Inlet. The tram stops upon request.
