Correction: Previous versions of this story misidentified the area. It is Claymont.

"Drop the knife! Drop the knife!"

Those words echoed down into a backyard shaded by the steep I-95 Harvey Road exit, near Claymont, as Kevin Rosciolo worked on a deck in cool Saturday afternoon weather.

"It sounded like a young voice yelling. And the next thing you heard was like a jolting sound, like he got hit with a Taser. He just started screaming," Rosciolo said later.

A short time after that came the wail of police sirens, Rosciolo said.

What Rosciolo heard was a confrontation between a New Castle County police officer and a man he'd chased to the exit ramp from near the community of Northridge.

County police said officers were sent to that neighborhood around 11:45 a.m. concerning a man trespassing in several backyards there. Officers searched the area, and one found him in the area of Harvey Road and I-95, according to county police.

The officer tried to stop, but the man ran and the officer gave chase, county police said. He caught up to him on the off ramp and there was a struggle, county police said.

County police did not offer details on that struggle, but the 17-year veteran was stabbed in the leg. County police said the injury was minor, and he was taken to the hospital.

The man who police said assaulted the officer hasn't yet been charged and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. County police are still investigating the chase and stabbing.

State and county police closed the off-ramp while the investigation was underway.

County police said more information will be released later.
