Wind and rain topple tree, cancel Mother's Day walk

CLOSE

Here are seven tips for driving in heavy rain. Treasure Coast Newspapers

"Rain, rain, go away, come again another day."

That was the refrain on what ended up being a very wet Mother's Day.

As of 1:15 p.m., U.S. 202 northbound was closed just over the state line in Pennsylvania due to flooding.

Rains, moderate to heavy at times, moved through northeast Maryland, northern Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania, accompanied by gusty winds up to 35 miles per hour.

It was expected to continue overnight, with more rain on Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory, which was in effect until from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday in New Castle County and from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. in Kent and Sussex Counties.

Minor flooding was anticipated during high tide.

On Clifford Road in Elsmere, the deluge and wind brought down a large tree, damaging a house. Though unclear if weather was the cause, about 400 households in the Edgemoor area were without power as of 2:50 p.m.

Wilmington's River Taxi was not operating and a Mother's Day brunch on the Riverboat Queen never left the dock.

The annual Mother's Day walk hosted by the Delaware Ornithological Society at White Clay Creek was canceled, according to Facebook, as well as other outdoor events.

The game against the Blue Rocks and Potomac Nationals at Frawley Stadium was postponed due to the weather, but the Mother's Day Brunch was proceeding.

Tickets for the game can be exchanged for any other regular season home game during the 2019 season, according to the Blue Rocks' Facebook Page.
